Wade Lack is set to take on the ultimate challenge at the Gawler Relay For Life next weekend, relaying solo for 19 hours to raise funds and awareness for Cancer Council SA.
A first time Relay participant, Wade says for him, completing the challenge is a way to raise money while making a difference to the lives of those impacted by cancer in his local community.
“Cancer really is an illness that touches everyone, so when I heard about the event I knew it was something I wanted to be involved in. My wife’s best friend is on the Relay organising committee, which is another strong motivator to get involved.”
Unlike most Relay participants, who take on the 19 hour challenge in teams, Wade will be completing the entire Relay solo. His aim is to raise $1,140—$1 for every minute he’ll be relaying on the track.
“I know that relaying for 19 hours might seem like a huge challenge but it’s nothing compared to the challenges that cancer patients face every single day. I’m lucky enough that I haven’t been impacted by cancer, but I know a lot of people who have, so this is my way of giving back.”
Since he started fundraising, Wade has been touched by the amount of people who have come forward to share their personal cancer stories and experiences.
“I had no idea how many people in my community had been touched by cancer. I’ve had friends and family from all walks of life get in contact to support me and share a bit about their own cancer connection. It’s been a really great way to start a conversation and has motivated me even further to make a difference.”
Wade is calling on family and friends to come down on the weekend and join him for a lap.
“Everyone’s welcome to come down and walk with me during the weekend. If you can’t make it down, you can show your support by donating online. Together, we can all make a difference.”
Held from Saturday, 30 to Sunday 31 March, the Gawler Relay For Life is an event for all ages and gives friends, family and co-workers the chance to join together and show their support for their loved ones facing cancer.
All the money raised through the event will go towards Cancer Council SA's research, prevention, advocacy and support services, including the Cancer Council Lodges at Flinders and Greenhill, which provide accommodation to country cancer patients and their families travelling to Adelaide for treatment.
Gawler Relay For Life Event Lead Megan Hodge said that Relay is an amazing event that empowers the local community to fight back against cancer.
“Relay is such a powerful experience and seeing so many people come together for a common cause is truly inspiring. Cancer touches everyone in some way or another and it’s important that as a community we do all we can to show our support and raise money, which will ultimately save lives.”
“Like many South Australians, I have seen cancer impact the ones that I love most and know how heartbreaking a cancer diagnosis can be. Taking part in Relay our chance to give back to an amazing cause, all while having a great weekend with family and friends. “
