Twenty years ago this May, people all over Australia gathered in living rooms, schools, workplaces and community centres to celebrate the first Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council.
From these humble beginnings grew one of Australia’s most popular fundraising events, now enjoyed by over a million Australians each year. Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea this May 23rd and help beat cancer.
Monique Bowley, contestant on the upcoming program The Great Australian Bake Off, will host her own Biggest Morning Tea today, helping us kick off our Morning Tea month as hundreds of local hosts pull out their tea sets and dust off their baking trays ready for their own events.
“In my life, it's any excuse to sit down with a cuppa. This way, by hosting or attending a Biggest Morning Tea, you get to feel good about your morning tea break because it's for an excellent cause,” says Monique.
“We all know someone who has been affected by cancer. I’m doing my bit today to help make a difference, and hope you will too. No matter how big or small your event is, every cup counts in the fight against cancer."
Look out for Monique’s vintage caravan The Little Van That Could and Cancer Council SA volunteers this morning at Hindmarsh Square from 11.00am, and enjoy a morning tea break with us to help start the celebrations.
Every year thousands of South Australians come together for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea during May to help support more than 9,300 people who are diagnosed with cancer each year in SA.
“We’re excited to be celebrating 20 years of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea this year with the help of our amazing South Australian hosts who have supported us all along the way,” says Professor Brenda Wilson, Chief Executive, Cancer Council SA.
“In 20 years, Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea has raised over $110million dollars nationally and the survival rate for many common cancers has increased by 30%. We look forward to the next 20 years, as we discover more breakthroughs in the fight to beat cancer.”
There couldn’t be an easier way to help make a difference. Simply get together your friends, family and colleagues, put the kettle on and tuck into some delicious morning tea.
Money raised will help minimise the impact of cancer on all South Australians by investing in important cancer research, targeted prevention programs and support services that are vital for people with cancer and their families.
Last year almost 3,000 South Australians registered for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, together raising $875,000.
The official date for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea 2013 is Thursday 23 May, but you can host an event any time during May or June. For more information about registering as a host visit www.biggestmorningtea.com.au or call 1300 65 65 85.
